Science Saru has proven itself to be one of the most innovative studios working in anime today, having taken on projects everywhere from the surreal and elastic worlds of Masaaki Yuasa, to the graphic-novel inspired feel of Scott Pilgrim Takes Off and the galaxy of Star Wars: Visions. For their newest original series, the studio is turning to the world of the paranormal, with a quirky romcom set to arrive on the scene just in time for Halloween.
Combining lighthearted school romance with paranormal action-comedy, Dan Da Dan is set to be an eclectic mix of genres that only a studio like Science Saru can conjure up. Crunchyroll describes the premise of the show as follows:
This is a story about Momo, a high school girl who comes from a family of spirit mediums, and her classmate Okarun, an occult fanatic. After Momo rescues Okarun from being bullied, they begin talking. However, an argument ensues between them since Momo believes in ghosts but denies aliens exist, and Okarun believes in aliens but denies ghosts exist. To prove to each other what they believe in is real, Momo goes to an abandoned hospital where a UFO has been spotted and Okarun goes to a tunnel rumored to be haunted. To their surprise, they each encounter overwhelming paranormal activities that transcend comprehension. Amid these predicaments, Momo awakens her hidden power and Okarun gains the power of a curse to overcome these new dangers! Their fateful love begins as well!? The story of the occult battle and adolescence starts!
Dan Da Dan is the latest series from Science Saru, a studio known for its striking visual style as well as its balance of original content with high-profile adaptations like Scott Pilgrim and Star Wars. The character designs are being handled by Naoyuki Onda (of Psycho-Pass: The Movie), in addition to a separate designer role designated just for the fantastical beasts and monsters the heroes encounter, designed by Yoshimichi Kameda (ofMob Psycho 100).
