The PlayStation 5 Pro CPU is unlikely to improve performance in CPU-bound titles and may not even be enough to implement 40 FPS modes that are impossible on the base model.
In a recent video, the tech experts at Digital Foundry talked about the CPU of the upcoming mid-generation refresh console from Sony, saying that its 10% performance boost over the base model's CPU is unlikely to boost performance in CPU-bound titles or allow developers to implement 40 FPS modes in such games, as developers would need way more CPU overhead to achieve a 33% performance boost. It is more probable that 40 FPS modes may be implemented for games that can already run at higher than 30 FPS on the base model, although it is very unlikely that a developer will decide to implement a PS5 Pro-exclusive 40 FPS mode over achieving better visual quality with the new console's power. 40 FPS modes, however, will still benefit in terms of stability from the better CPU, but Digital Foundry doesn't expect these modes to be widely available on the console, considering the crowd playing games in these modes is extremely limited.
As the PlayStation 5 Pro will not revolutionize the current-generation console landscape in any major way, many have questioned whether the system was actually needed. According to a known AMD leaker, there are plenty of reasons for Sony to release their mid-generation system, as the PlayStation 5 still having some untapped potential is just a myth due to several reasons, including homogenized CPU and GPU design from all vendors.
The PlayStation 5 Pro has yet to be officially announced. We will keep you updated on the upcoming system as soon as more come in, so stay tuned for all the latest news.
