A is in the works at Netflix, according to a recent report from Variety.
The series is a new iteration based on the iconic IP, according to Variety. A previous D&D series had been in the works at Paramount+, but that project is no longer moving forward, according to Variety’s report. In partnership with Netflix, Hasbro Entertainment will also produce the television series.
The TV show is currently titled “The Forgotten Realms,” a reference to the fantasy world setting that acts as a campaign setting for Dungeons & Dragons. Drew Crevello, who was previously set to be the showrunner for the Paramount+ series, will make the move to this show, and serve as showrunner for the series, as well as writer and executive producer.
Shawn Levy will also be attached as an executive producer, as will Dan Levine.
Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game originally released in 1974. Since then, the game has become a cultural phenomenon, and has been updated over the years, with its revised 5th edition recently releasing in 2024. The game has been adapted into various forms of media over the years, including an animated television show in the 1980s, as well as various live-action movies in the 2000s.
Most recently, a successful live-action movie, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, was released in 2023, and starred Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Justice Smith, Sophia Lillis, and Hugh Grant. The film earned more than $200 million at the box office, and a sequel to the project has been rumored to be considered for some time.
