is moving forward at Warner Bros. Pictures.
Directed by Richard Donner, The Goonies was released in 1985 by Warner Bros. The adventure comedy film stars Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, Jeff Cohen, Kerri Green, and Martha Plimpton.
While there’s been on-again, off-again talk of making a Goonies sequel for years, Deadline reported last month that Warner Bros. was looking to make both The Goonies 2 and a new Gremlins movie.
Now, per Deadline, Potsy Ponciroli has been hired to write the script for The Goonies 2.
Potsy Ponciroli created Still the King, a Billy Ray Cyrus-led series that ran for 26 episodes. He also wrote and directed 2012’s Super Zeroes and 2021’s Old Henry, the latter of which stars Tim Blake Nelson. He most recently helmed Greedy People, a 2024 movie with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Himseh Patel.
Additionally, Ponciroli was also recently tapped to direct a modern-day western titled The Rescue, which will star Brandon Sklenar. That movie does not yet have a release date.
Plot details for The Goonies 2 remain under wraps at this time. No director has yet signed onto the project, and it’s currently unclear which cast members from the original movie will be returning for the sequel.
It is known, however, that Steven Spielberg will produce the sequel, as the Jurassic Park director also produced and came up with the story for the original movie. Also producing The Goonies 2 are Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario, while Chris Columbus and Lauren Shuler Donner will serve as executive producers.
An official release date for The Goonies 2 has not yet been announced. As for the aforementioned Gremlins project, there’s been no news about that since the original Deadline article.
