There’s an unnerving entity living in my phone. It sends me cryptic, insistent messages, leaves barely comprehensible texts, and I never really know its true intentions. It’s not a really needy internet friend, it’s Franz. She’s haunting my phone and I’m not sure I am okay with it.
Franz is a new creation from Ice-Pick Lodge, a Russian studio known for surreal and fascinating games like Pathologic, The Void, and Knock-Knock, the other title available on Android right now.
They make weird games. Franz is a weird game.
Franz is about an entity that lives in your phone. You can decide whether you’re going to treat this creature kindly or not so kindly, and she won’t forget it.
She also has some say over the situation. If you upset Franz enough, she might throw you out of the app and back to your home screen. Well, it’s only fair.
Her influence spread beyond her app too. Franz will send you notifications, demanding your attention. You don’t have to respond of course. She won’t perish like a Tamagotchi, but she might not like being neglected for long periods of time.
On the other hand, she also doesn’t like it if you insist on barging back into her home after she asks you to leave. Who does? You can keep playing, but any attempt to impress your spooky new friend might be an uphill battle.
All the while you’re left unsure what exactly you’re dealing with. Is Franz a harmless creature you’re unnecessarily mistrustful of? Or some kind of monster looking for an opportunity to manipulate you?
As with many Ice-Pick Lodge games, the mechanics are unclear, and you’ll need to experiment for yourself. The game is free to download and try out for yourself via Google Play.
