The Amazing Spider-Man 3 starring Andrew Garfield never hit theaters as planned, but as Garfield plans to take an acting break, it could mean good news for a future release. Sony also had planned for The Amazing Spider-Man 4 and spin-off films featuring Spider-Man villains to build a wider universe around Garfield's Peter Parker. However, after a disappointing response to The Amazing Spider-Man 2 both at the box office and critically, all of these films were canceled.
Garfield was fired and Sony negotiated with Marvel to bring Spider-Man into the MCU in Captain America: Civil War with Tom Holland in the role. Hopes for The Amazing Spider-Man 3 were dashed until Garfield's surprise return in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In his reappearance, Garfield's Peter is still mourning the death of Gwen Stacy, but the opportunity to work with Holland and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Men gave him some needed optimism for a potential cinematic future. It also reminded viewers of just how much they had missed Garfield's version of Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
