The Netflix streaming date for Sam Raimi's original Spider-Man trilogy has been announced. The Spider-Man films, which starred Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, are largely responsible for the current boom of superhero movies. Without the big-budget spectacle of the Spider-Man trilogy blazing a trail, along with other popular projects like the Blade and X-Men trilogies, the modern Marvel Cinematic Universe (which features its own Spider-Man trilogy) likely wouldn't even exist, at least in the same form. The MCU has even honored Raimi's contributions to the superhero genre by giving him a victory lap in the form of directorial duties on 2022's Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
The Spider-Man trilogy began with Spider-Man in 2002, which followed Parker being bitten by a radioactive spider, gaining superpowers, becoming a vigilante hero after the death of his Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson), and squaring off against the villainous Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe). That film also introduced important characters who would span the entire trilogy, including Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst), Harry Osborn (James Franco), and J. Jonah Jameson (J.K. Simmons). The blockbuster trilogy continued into 2004's Spider-Man 2, which features Spider-Man saving New York from Doc Ock (Alfred Molina), and 2007's Spider-Man 3, a largely maligned film that is rather busy with villains, features Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) attached to the Venom symbiote and Sandman (Thomas Haden Church).
