Last Friday, Final Fantasy 7 mobile spin-off Ever Crisis added a chapter all about young Sephiroth, which fans believe might tie into part two of the remake trilogy, Rebirth.
As reported by Eurogamer, the story tackles Sephiroth's upbringing, how he got his powers, and his parentage. He's the son of Shinra scientists Hojo and Lucrecia, but when he shows a photo of his mother in the new trailer, he refers to her as "Jenova".

Jenova is an alien entity, also known as Calamity from the Skies. Hojo injected Lucrecia with Jenova's cells when she was pregnant, which is how Sephiroth got so powerful. He clearly doesn't know about his alien origins and has merged the two into one entity, all thanks to the manipulation of his father, which could have ramifications on his character arc in Rebirth if the two are connected.
Interestingly, in the Ever Crisis trailer, Rosen asks Sephiroth, "Who exactly is the life you are trying to save?" And in the latest Rebirth trailer, we hear a similar line, "Will you exist in the world I'm trying to save?"
This has sparked theories that young Sephiroth's backstory will tie into Rebirth's narrative, and that we might see him reckon with his alien origins and Hojo's deceit. Rebirth launches on February 29, next year, so we won't have to wait long to find out.
In the original Final Fantasy 7, much of Sephiroth's backstory is shrouded in mystery. We know the core details - he was once a dutiful SOLDIER like Cloud, but fell from grace - but a lot of the in-between specifics are unclear.
The new remake world that Square Enix is carving out is far more willing to dive deeper into Sephiroth and his origins,
