Super Mario Bros. Wonder is right around the corner, and with it comes a brand new art style for Mario and friends, bringing an end to the New Super Mario Bros. style that many fans had been sick and tired off for quite a while. It's proven a popular change, but despite its popularity, it seems as though it's not a guarantee that we'll see the style used again when Nintendo comes to developing the next 2D Mario title.
In an interview with Game Informer, game producer Takashi Tezuka and art director Masanobu Sato is asked about Mario games in the past, and if Super Mario Bros. Wonder marks a new era for the series' 2D outings. It seems as though the two are happy to be moving on from the New Super Mario Bros. style, but are quite hesitant to confirm whether this new style will be the blueprint for future 2D Mario games going forward.

"I believe that we have transitioned from the New Super Mario Bros. series into a new phase, but at this point, we have no idea what the next game style will be," says Tezuka. "However, what we do know is that Super Mario Bros. Wonder has set a bigger stage for adventure for Mario and friends," adds Sato.
It's a pretty sensible decision not to lock yourself down to one particular art style for the future, especially when Super Mario Bros. Wonder isn't even on store shelves yet. However, if Tezuka's comments do reflect the actual thinking at Nintendo, then it's very exciting to think that we may see more experimental art style used in the future. We're very unlikely to see the New Super Mario Bros. art style come back given how tired and dated it feels, and being unshackled in this way may tempt Nintendo
