The trailer for previews the upcoming MGM+ adaptation of Stephen L. Carter’s best-selling novel of the same name, revealing that the new series will debut on July 14. New episodes will then air each Sunday until the finale on September 15.
The adaptation is set in the world of politics. The focus is on Ivy League academia and the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard. The story focuses on Talcott, a law professor who sees his quiet life shattered when his father dies of an apparent heart attack. That death is questioned by Tal’s sister, Mariah Denton, a former journalist and occasional conspiracy theorist that believes the Black Supreme Court nominee died because of foul play.

The cast features Forest Whitaker and Grantham Coleman in prominent roles. Coleman has been announced as portraying Talcott Garland, while Whitaker will portray Judge Oliver Garland. Jessica Jones alum Tiffany Mack, meanwhile, stars as Mariah, and Paulina Lule (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D) plays Kimmer Madison Garland, Tal’s wife. Madison’s a high-powered lawyer on the verge of being appointed a federal judgeship.
Season 1 will also include NAACP Image Award Winner Keith Powers (The Perfect Find, The Tomorrow War, The Uglies), Kelli Simpkins (American Rust, Work in Progress, 61st Street), Keith Kupferer (Ghostlight, Windows, The Dark Knight), and Deanna Reed-Foster (The Shining Girls, Vince Staples Show, Chicago Fire).
Sherman Payne, who wrote on Shameless, is set to serve as showrunner. Damian Marcano (Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty) is set to direct multiple episodes. It is produced by John Wells Productions and Warner Bros. Television. John Wells, Sherman Payne, Damian Marcano, Shukree Tilghman, and JWP’s Erin Jontow are set to be executive producers.
