12VHPWR connectors have caused severe issues in the PC community, and several companies have brought solutions to avert the widespread issues with the new 16-pin connectors. This time, Cooler Master has introduced an updated 12VHPWR cable with a 90-degree plug included with its brand-new line of GX PSUs.
This isn't the first time we have seen 90-degree power connectors in the industry. Previously, Cablemod introduced a similar product, but that was a separate adapter. Moreover, we all know what happened with the CableMod adapters after several users reported burning issues by using them, and it opened up a whole new debate in the industry.
Coming back, Cooler Master claims that the structure of the 90-degree cables is superior to any of its competitors. It features 25% thicker contacts and a 45% lower impedance change rate, resulting in less temperatures. While the numbers provided are encouraging, the product's ultimate success depends on whether it helps with the burning issue.
Cooler Master hasn't specified what PSUs will include the new connectors, but newer models, such as the GX III GOLD, are expected to include the new cables. PSU manufacturers are experimenting with new ways to cater to the 12VHPWR burning incidents. MSI has introduced a unique solution to the problem by using colored connectors to let consumers know whether the connectors are fully seated.
The effectiveness of such solutions has yet to be tested, although judging by past events, it is evident that the concept behind the 12VHPWR connection is full of flaws. A ray of hope has been ignited by the 12V-2x6 PCIe 6.0 connectors recently introduced by PCI-SIG, and it is already integrated into current GPUs. But a vast majority of users planning to upgrade
