Sony has announced a new Astro Bot game.
Simply titled Astro Bot, the game will be released on PS5 on September 6.
Although Astro Bot is a popular PlayStation character these days, the new Astro Bot title marks the character’s first full-price, non-VR game.
The character first appeared in The Playroom, a collection of AR mini-games that came pre-loaded on PS4 consoles to show off the abilities of the DualShock 4 controller and PlayStation Camera.
This was followed by an appearance in The Playroom VR, another compilation for PlayStation VR which included a brief platform game called Robot Rescue. This was expanded to a full-price game, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which was a PlayStation VR exclusive.
The character’s most popular appearance by far, however, is as the star of Astro’s Playroom, a tech demo included with every PS5 console.
The game is another 3D platformer, designed to show off the DualSense controller, and is full of references to previous PlayStation games and hardware.
“We listened to your comments and now, Astro is back in a super-sized space adventure, his biggest to date,” studio director Nicolas Doucet said on the officialPlayStation Blog.
“In this brand-new game, you will explore 6 galaxies and over 80 levels in search of Astro’s scattered crew. Hold on tight to your Dual Speeder and dive down to each unique planet, from lush forests, sandy beaches, hot volcanoes to more surprising locations such as a gigantic hourglass or the canopy of a singing tree.”
The game will see Astro making use of 15 new abilities, making full use of the DualSense controller.
“During this epic adventure, Astro will reunite with many friends from the PlayStation universe,” Doucet added.
“The trailer shows only a few but we double down on the cast and hope to delight every PlayStation fan out there. And who knows, maybe this time, these characters will play an even bigger part in saving the day?”
