Herschel “Guy” Beahm, the popular streamer known online as “DrDisrespect,” has confirmed previous allegations that Twitch had banned him in 2020 for exchanging messages with a minor.
“Were there Twitch whisper messages with an individual minor back in 2017? The answer is yes,” Beahm wrote Tuesday on X. “Were there real intentions behind these messages, the answer is absolutely not. These were casual, mutual conversations that sometimes leaned too much in the direction of being inappropriate, but nothing more.” At the time of publication, Beahm has edited his tweet on X twice. This article quotes the original version of the statement he published.
This past weekend, two Twitch employees had come forward — one on X on June 22, and one to The Verge on June 23 — to claim that Beahm had been banned from the platform after using a Twitch DM feature called “whispers” to exchange messages with a minor. After the news broke, Midnight Society, a game development studio Beahm had co-founded, announced that it had terminated its relationship with the streamer. On Tuesday, Beahm shared a lengthy statement, which was quoted above, at his official X account that described his side of the story.
Polygon has reached out to Beahm and Twitch for comment.
