Assassin’s Creed Mirage launches next month, but Ubisoft has a lot more stabby fun in the works. As they’ve announced, in addition to the more stripped-down Mirage, there are two other major AC titles currently in production – Assassin’s Creed Codename Red (an open-world RPG-style game set in Feudal Japan from Ubisoft Quebec) and Assassin’s Creed Codename Hexe (a darker take on the series focused on European witch hunts during the Renaissance from Ubisoft Montreal). Rumor has it that Assassin’s Creed Red may be arriving as soon as next year, and reliable Ubisoft insider Tom Henderson has provided a few interesting fresh details about the game.
As we’ve already heard, Assassin’s Creed Red will focus heavily on stealth, perhaps even taking a few elements from Splinter Cell, including the ability to hide in shadows. Well, in a new report, Henderson adds a new wrinkle – destructible environments. These will be combined with AC Red’s stealth gameplay, allowing players to, for instance, cut or break through certain doors in order to sneak up on or ambush enemies. Henderson warns this isn’t quite Battlefield-style destruction, don’t expect to be bursting through solid walls, but it sounds like the environment will be a lot more interactive this time around.
In terms of story, Henderson reiterates earlier reports that Assassin’s Creed Red will have two protagonists that offer varied gameplay – a male samurai and a female shinobi/ninja. Not a lot is known about the female character, but the male one is said to be a refugee from Africa and Henderson speculates he’s based on the real-life figure Yasuke, one of the earliest documented Black samurai.
