NASA’s next spacesuits might arrive runway-ready.
Axiom Space has joined forces with the Italian luxury fashion house Prada for the lunar spacesuits that will be used on NASA’s Artemis III mission.
"Prada's technical expertise with raw materials, manufacturing techniques, and innovative design concepts will bring advanced technologies instrumental in ensuring not only the comfort of astronauts on the lunar surface but also the much-needed human factors considerations absent from legacy spacesuits,” Michael Suffredini, CEO of Axiom Space said in a statement.
To create the suits Prada’s team of engineers will work alongside the Axiom Space systems team to collaborate on both the design and the materials used in the suit to ensure it is ready for the unique challenges presented in space.
The AxEMU spacesuit is designed to provide increased flexibility over previous spacesuit options as well as greater protection for astronauts working in the crash conditions of space. Additionally, the suits will include specialized tools for exploration and scientific opportunities, enabling astronauts greater exploration of the lunar surface than previously possible.
The Artemis III mission currently has a formal launch date of December 2025. The mission is expected to last for 30 days and is expected to be the first human moon landing since Apollo 17 in 1972. Four astronauts are expected to make the journey.
