Microsoft is reportedly planning to unveil new Gears of War and Call of Duty games at its traditional Xbox summer showcase.
That’s according to The Verge, which claims that the event is currently planned for Sunday, June 9, the same weekend as Summer Game Fest (and the day before Ubisoft’s Forward event).
“As the Xbox strategy continues to evolve inside Microsoft and Choudhry’s departure triggers more shake-ups, Microsoft is in the middle of planning for its big summer Xbox showcase,” wrote journalist Tom Warren.
“I understand this is set to take place on Sunday, June 9th, and Microsoft is currently planning to announce a new Gears of War game at the show.
“A Gears announcement won’t be the only new Xbox game at the show, which will also include release dates for upcoming Xbox games like Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Avowed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and of course, a new Call of Duty that’s set to debut later this year.”
The Verge report is the second time this week word of a potential Gears of War reveal has entered the news cycle.
During the latest episode of the Kinda Funny Xcast, host Parris Lilly made a prediction that Gears 6 news would arrive in the summer, a prediction which was then seemingly verified by that episode’s guest, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb.
“I will say, I’ve heard some stuff might be happening with Gears 6 this summer, so I think that tease sounds about right to me, Parris. That seems like what we can expect.”
Since its acquisition of the Gears of War IP in 2014, Microsoft has released two mainline series entries – 2016’s Gears of War 4 and 2019’s Gears 5, both developed by The Coalition – as well as Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and the turn-based tactics spin-off Gears Tactics.
