Howdy ho, friends and lovers, and welcome to this week’s edition of Whatcha Been Playing? This week sees us waving farewell to February, and optimistically hoping for the sunshine and warm air of the coming spring season. I know I’m more than ready to throw off my second duvet, and I’m sick of keeping warm by throwing spare money bundles on the fire, (I am a Games Journalist after all).
While not quite as jam-packed as 2022, the start of this year has seen the release of quite few big releases, and we’re now entering something of a dry period (though we still have a few gems coming in March). It’s strange how the industry is yet to quite restore its calendar to its pre-COVID status, and the start of the year is now the new “Holiday releases” period. Ehh, not that there’s any point in complaining, we all have far, far too many games to get through anyway, such is the insatiable appetite of our hobby.
It’s been another busy-busy week here on the good ship Destructoid, but I still had enough time to run through the highly enjoyable Gothic platformer Grim Guardians: Demon Purge. A title that surprised me on multiple levels, I had a very good time with what is, at its heart, a relatively simplistic release that aims for attainable goals and achieves them handily. Aside from that, I spent a little time, bafflingly, getting back on my Siege bullshit. It’s been a long time. Long enough, in fact, that I was shocked to be taken down by both Like a Dragon‘s Goro Majima and NieR: Automata‘s 2B… Y’know, those iconic Tom Clancy characters. Ehh, I’m being facetious, of course. It’s a fantastic shooter and still offers up intense, twitchy, nail-biting action.
