The Mario Movie's Digital Launch Has Been Indefinitely Delayed
We all knew The Super Mario Bros. Movie was going to do well at the box office, even after its middling reviews started to roll in. It's a movie about the most famous video game character of all time created by a studio with a terrific track record when it comes to animated blockbusters. What even its creators didn't expect was how well it was going to do as Mario's box office success appears to have resulted in its digital and Blu-Ray release dates being pushed back.
The news that Universal has delayed both the digital and physical home releases of the Mario movie comes in the wake of the film surpassing $900 million at the box office. A number that will likely become $1 billion as it finally launches in Japan today. While not confirmed in an official capacity, you'll have to wait a little longer to watch the film in the comfort of your own home, and it seems very likely the reason for that is Mario's continued dominance in cinemas.

News that the digital release of the movie has been pushed back indefinitely was shared by dfffaz on Twitter, claiming Amazon to be the source of the news. Peacock had a placeholder for when a digital version of the film would be available on its platform of May 9. Having checked for myself on Amazon, which carries Peacock here in the UK, I can confirm when you try to pre-order it, which you can still do, you are met with a message that reads “Get this film as soon as it becomes available” rather than the prior placeholder date.
Even though there is now no telling when the Mario movie will be available digitally, the physical version does still have a release date. It's a few weeks later than it was originally though, now
