The Super Mario Bros. Movie's success shows no signs of slowing down, as it's now projected to easily reach the $1 billion mark at the international box office. This comes before the film has even debuted in Japan, which will likely give the film another huge wave of success just as it's dying down elsewhere.
This projection comes as the most recent reports put Mario's earnings at $678 million - around $350 million coming from outside of the US. It's even being reported that Mario is the number-one film in 26 countries right now, fighting off other big hitters such as John Wick 4 and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

This latest update comes courtesy of Deadline, who have just shared the latest figures from the international and US box office. Given this continued success, it seems that many fans are going back to watch it again, enough to tide the figures over until it premieres in other regions.
Perhaps most impressively, the film looks set to break yet another record. While it was already the fastest-growing animated film (overtaking Frozen 2), Deadline is now also reporting that it's the fourth most successful film opening in IMAX. That's a lot of fans going to see it on the biggest screen they can find.
Of course, given that this is the first non-video game outing for the Mario Bros. in years, it's hardly surprising to see the movie do so well. The Mario series has fans of all ages, and the series has never taken advantage of that as much as, say, Sonic the Hedgehog, which always seems to have some sort of non-gaming project in the works. Now, it seems like the platforming pair are rivals once again, albeit not in the world of gaming this time.
