The Super Mario Bros. Movie continues to soar at the box office, nearing $700 million already. But how far can it go? The Hollywood Reporter said the film should crack $1 billion before its run in theaters ends, and if it does, it will join a select few animated films at that level.
Only 10 animated movies have ever made $1 billion or more, a list topped by 2019's The Lion King remake ($1.66 billion)--though not everyone agrees that it is an «animated» film considering its photo-realistic graphics. Not counting that movie, Disney's Frozen II tops the charts with $1.45 billion, followed by Frozen ($1.28 billion), Incredibles 2 ($1.24 billion), and Minions ($1.16 billion).
The Super Mario Bros. Movie will also become just the third movie--of any kind--during the pandemic era to pass $1 billion if it can climb that high. It would join Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion) and Top Gun: Maverick ($1.49 billion).
Here are the highest-grossing animated movies of all time:
The Super Mario Bros. Movie had a gigantic second weekend in theaters, with total box office numbers in North America falling by only 37% with $92.5 million. That's a fantastic number, and it's actually the seventh-best second-weekend performance for any movie in North America of all time for a film that started with more than $100 million domestically. Only MCU and Star Wars films, as well as Jurassic World, posted stronger second-weekend numbers in America.
Only 51 movies ever have earned $1 billion or more at the worldwide box office, so The Super Mario Bros. Movie would join relatively rare company if it hits that number.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie should get another jolt in box office numbers when the film releases in Nintendo's home country of Japan
