The Super Mario Bros. Movie has passed another massive box office milestone. The animated film has cleared $500 million in North America, and it joins rare company.
Only three movies before this had made $500 million or more in North America since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic--Spider-Man: No Way Home ($814.1 million), Top Gun: Maverick ($718.7 million), and Avatar: The Way of Water ($683.9 million).
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is also the first animated film from Illumination and Universal to reach $500 million stateside, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Globally, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is doing great, too, earning more than $1 billion so far. It's the first movie of 2023 to reach that mark.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie stars Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario and Charlie Day as Luigi. It features a Bowser ballad called «Peaches» that has gone on to become a very big hit outside the film.
The massive financial success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie pretty much guarantees that Nintendo and Illumination will stay in business and make more movies together.
