Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. director James Gunn has revealed that he came up with the backstory for the Infinity Stones in an hour and a half.
During an interview with Phase Zero, Gunn and the cast played a quiz revolving around the MCU and when asked to name all six Infinity Stones, the filmmaker revealed that he didn't put much thought in when coming up with the backstory for each of them.
Gunn explained that the scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1. where The Collector told the Guardians the history of the Infinity Stones--which laid the groundwork for the Infinity Saga--was written quickly and ultimately led to everything in the MCU being based around this scene.
«I wrote that scene in about an hour and a half, it just like came up with what the Infinity Stones were… and everything's [the entire MCU's] based on that...» Gunn said, laughing with actor Chris Pratt.
«They were like, 'You know, we're thinking about putting the Power Stone in.' I was like, 'That's cool. The Power Stone. The Collector has the Power Stone....' And I just made up this bullsh*t!»
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. was released on May 5 and marks the end of Gunn's trilogy. The latest box office numbers show that the latest MCU movie has dethroned The Super Mario Bros. movie with $282 million in its opening weekend.
In our Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. review, Phil Owen said, «Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 from writer/director James Gunn, is very well-crafted, hilarious, and, yes, touching. I even teared up a couple times. But once the post-credits scene came to an end and the lights in the theater came up, I was already over it.»
