Sony has finally announced the production of a slimmer PS5 model after years of rumors and speculation. It’s sent to launch “this holiday season,” which, judging from the seasonal stock in most department stores, started sometime in July.
I can’t believe it’s been nearly three years since the launch of the PlayStation 5. For the longest time, it was hard to even get your hands on one. If you were someone who persevered and got a launch model, here’s the inevitable spit in your eye.
It’s not that bad, though. The slimmer PS5 model doesn’t have any more horsepower and is coming fitted with the same size hard drive (1TB). The reveal trailer doesn’t really show off any comparison between the two models, which is because there’s not tremendous difference. It’s described as having reduced “more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24%.” So, it’s definitely leaner in line with the PS4 or PS3 redesigns. The launch model PS5 was a pretty chonky beast, so I’m sure your shelves will thank you.
It comes in both disc and all-digital versions, though the digital version will now have an option to add an Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive. The vertical stand is sold separately for some reason.
The slimmer model PS5 will start showing up in stores “this holiday season.” The price remains $499.99 USD for the disc model, and 449.99 USD for the discless one.
