A newly-released Nintendo Switch game in Japan requires a roll of toilet paper to play.
It sounds ridiculous, but the game No Paper!(Opens in a new window) developed by Takuhiro Miyazawa relies on a Joy-Con controller slotted inside the tube of a toilet paper roll to control the game. A large piece of cardboard or other flat surface that's comfortable to hold is also required to allow the toilet paper to roll back and forth.
As Polygon reports(Opens in a new window), the game sees you attempting to help a man who is in trouble because he's on the toilet with no access to paper. Your task is to get a fresh roll to him, but that requires navigating the toilet roll through an obstacle course, avoiding traps, hitting switches, and collecting keys. All of which is achieved through rolling a real roll.
The developer of No Paper! is simply taking advantage of the motion sensors contained in the Joy-Con to track movement. Adding a toilet roll requirement is clever because they are readily available, cheap, and it's ridiculous enough to generate a lot of free press for a game that only costs 600 yen ($4.50) on the Nintendo eShop. For now, it's only available in Japan, but should hopefully head to the US and Europe where healthy supplies of toilet rolls also exist.
For anyone who wants to take advantage of the Joy-Con motion sensors in a more conventional and strenuous gaming experience, Ring Fit Adventure is highly recommended.
