Back when Overwatch 2 first launched last October, Blizzard had to apologize to fans upset that the promised single-player campaign mode didn't arrive along with it. Instead, Overwatch 2 launched as a multiplayer-only title similar to Overwatch 1, with fans being told they "may have to wait a bit" for the single-player campaign to arrive.
Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller said progress was "going slower" than Blizzard would have liked, but two book listings suggested that the single-player content would finally arrive in November 2023. It seems that those listings were pretty accurate, as Overwatch's latest dev update has given us a roadmap that says Story Missions are coming in Season 6.

Unfortunately, these "Story Missions" are probably not what people were expecting when Blizzard promised a single-player campaign for Overwatch 2. Originally, Blizzard envisioned a standalone version of Overwatch 2 with separate progression and talent trees, but that idea has since been scrapped entirely. Instead, players will get smaller "missions" released with each new season that tell bits and pieces of Overwatch's story. They'll also be mixed in with story-based events and other co-op missions that will be non-canon.
Overwatch fans are disappointed with the news, with Overwatch 2 streamer KarQ accusing Blizzard of over-promising and under-delivering. "So the business strategy now is always prioritize the live service game," he wrote on Twitter. "I know it wasn't an easy decision for the team but this just sucks man."
Expect these story missions to be standalone and self-contained stories that focus on a particular hero.
