When Phase 3 of Season of Discovery launched, with it came the new open world events Nightmare Incursions. The gold rewards for completing the associated quests were incredibly lucrative, some players reporting that they made several hundred gold in the first evening of leveling.
This seems to not have been intended, however, and as such the gold rewards from the quests have been nerfed. According to WoW Classic Senior Game Producer Josh Greenfield there was some «doubling up on math» that caused quests to reward more gold than they wanted.
While completing the Nightmare Incursion quests is still a lucrative business, with the nerfs it's a far cry from the gold rewards they launched with. This has caused many players to feel at an disadvantage, and many expressed their discontent on X as well as on Reddit.
One sentiment that is being vocalized is how this could affect the economy of Season of Discovery going forward.
There was already an influx in gold as quests completed at max level in previous Phases rewarded additional gold, and many are wondering if this will put players that benefitted from the early Nightmare Incursions rewards way ahead of the rest of the player population.
Blizzard has notoriously been on a warpath against RMT (Real Money Transactions), and implemented a policy that banned distributing Dungeon and Raid items through gold bids in Phase 2 of Season of Discovery. One way to combat RMT has seemed to be increased gold rewards, especially since the Discoverer's Delight buff increased gold rewards from quests by 300%.
Perhaps an oversight of this buff affecting the Nightmare Incursions quests was the source of the «doubling up on math»?
Despite the gold rewards being reduced drastically, Nightmare Incursions are still a good source of gold, an extremely fast way to level up, and the only way to increase your reputation with the Emerald Wardens faction.
