NCSoft’s Q3 financial report is out, and the company is reporting declining revenue once again, primarily from its mobile portfolio. The company’s PC MMORPGS remained strong.
Still, there was definitely reason to be concerned about the direction, as the Q3 report showed another 4% decline in sales from Q2 and a 30% drop in sales year-over-year (YoY). When you break this down into operating profit, that number has been down 89% YoY including a 53% drop from Q2 to Q3.
So what’s behind the trouble spots? Mobile games. Lineage M, Lineage 2M, Blade & Soul 2 , and Lineage W have all seen a collective 8% drop from Q2. This comes as part of three consecutive quarterly drops. On PC, sales were up across the catalog, with a 6% rise from Q2 across “legacy PC online games”, namely Lineage, Lineage 2, AION, Blade & Soul , and Guild Wars 2 . The latter changed over to a seasonal model and released its first new expansion, Secrets of the Obscure, under the new format in August, impacting these numbers.
Sure, 6% is a small increase, but it is an increase. With the first big update to Secrets of the Obscure, Through the Veil, just released this week, and is likely to help heading into Q4. Also on NCSoft’s plate is the upcoming South Korean release of Throne and Liberty in December, followed by its eventual Western launch, as published by Amazon, next year.
