Activision has offered the first proper look at Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer maps.
The game will feature updated versions of all 16 launch maps from 2009’s Modern Warfare 2.
They are Afghan, Derail, Estate, Favela, Karachi, Highrise, Invasion, Quarry, Rundown, Rust, Scrapyard, Skidrow, Sub Base, Terminal, Underpass, and Wasteland.
In the video below, Sledgehammer Games’ art director Matt Abbott and design director Zach Hodson discuss the process of modernising the maps while attempting to stay true to their original feel.
“There are places where the metrics of the level are adjusted to fit more modern gameplay,” says Hodson, “but for the most part, it’s going to feel incredibly similar. The biggest changes are in a fidelity sense.”
More specific details on changes made to a number of the maps are covered in an accompanying blog post.

The first of two Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer beta weekends will kick off the following day, and it will be available exclusively on PS4 and PS5.
A selection of the remastered maps will be included in the multiplayer beta, along with new Ground War experiences.
The second beta weekend is for all platforms and will support cross-play.
Set for release on November 10, 2023, Modern Warfare 3 is a direct sequel to last year’s Modern Warfare 2. Development is being led by Sledgehammer, in collaboration with Infinity Ward, while Treyarch is in charge of its Zombies mode.
