I Am Legend is based on the 1954 book of the same name by Richard Matheson and the 1971 film The Omega Man by John William Corrington and Joyce H. Corrington. Initially, there were plans for a prequel about Neville’s life before the outbreak with Smith returning, but the project was ultimately scrapped.
In February 2023, Akiva Goldsman, the co-screenwriter of the original film, returned to Warner Bros. Pictures after signing a multi-year deal and revealed that the I Am Legend sequel was one of two projects he would be part of along with the sequel for the 2005’s Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves.
According to Goldsman, the upcoming film will be more faithful to Matheson’s book by following the alternate ending. “We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film,” he told Deadline. “What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end.
