Elon Musk's xAI has finally unveiled a brand new AI-based text generation model. Dubbed Grok, the chatbot is to serve as the startup's answer to the enduring popularity of the ubiquitous ChatGPT. Eventually, Musk hopes to integrate Grok with millions of fully AI-capable Tesla EVs.
Back in July 2023, Elon Musk officially launched his bid to capture the apex of the world of generative artificial intelligence by launching xAI, whose entire raison d'être centers on creating a "maximum truth-seeking AI" that tries to understand the true nature of the universe.
As we had noted at the time, xAI's team appeared to be quite eclectic, with employees sourced from the who's who of the AI world, including DeepMind, OpenAI, Google Research, Microsoft Research, Tesla, and the University of Toronto. In order to train a Large Language Model (LLM) on the pattern of OpenAI's ChatGPT, xAI has apparently leveraged around 10,000 GPUs that were purchased from NVIDIA within the first half of 2023.
Elon Musk had announced yesterday that xAI would release its first generative AI model to a "select group" on Saturday, going on to note that “in some important respects, it is the best that currently exists."
