Hot Wheels has been a part of the video game landscape since the 1980s, and these games have often helped give fans of the toy cars a chance to see their imaginations come to life. Most recently, took the franchise into gaming, and now developer Milestone is back with . As such, fans may well be expecting a step up from the previous entry.
has a similar framing to the original game, with the player taking control of a wide range of different Hot Wheels vehicles and racing across a variety of locales. Milestone certainly has pedigree, as shown with the developer’s ability with motorcycle racing games like and the official racing sim games, and the original was fairly well received. This sequel does expand upon the original format, but still has some limitations that some players may find frustrating.
When it comes to its moment-to-moment racing, is generally rather good fun. There’s a genuine sense of speed, as the toy cars and motorbikes zip and drift around the circuits. It certainly helps that boosts are almost always available, making when at its best feel like a mini version of .
The game maintains this peak when it sticks closest to the Hot Wheels brand as a whole, such as when zooming along the trademark orange speed track, going around loop-the-loops, or leaning into the scale of miniature cars in a regular-sized world. However, in those moments where it drifts into new territory, such as sections where the player is driving outside, on grass or tarmac, it feels a little less exciting.
