The Avengers will be assembling soon alongside the Planeswalkers of Magic: The Gathering. Hasbro and Marvel announced Monday a blockbuster partnership to bring collectible products and “tentpole sets” of cards based on the iconic superheroes to the leading collectible card game. Fans should expect to find them at retail beginning in 2025.
The crossover, per Hasbro, is part of a “multi-year, multi-set deal,” so this isn’t just a one-off drop like previously announced Universes Beyond sets that brought Fallout and Jurassic Park flavor to the 30-year-old card game. This initiative is being pushed as something even more expansive than previous collabs — bigger even than sets featuring characters from The Lord of the Rings novels or Dr. Who. That’s clear from the very dramatic announcement video — and its positioning the same week as a highly-anticipated quarterly earnings call for the Rhode Island-based game and toy manufacturer.
It’s obviously going to be quite some time before anyone gets to see what these cards look like. As the video implies, no cards are ready to be shown off just yet as the first set based on Marvel properties is still years away.
While Hasbro is sharing little beyond the existence of this extensive Marvel partnership, it does seem like the biggest yet for Magic, one that might have real mainstream appeal — especially if the cards are cool and thoughtfully designed. It’ll be fun, at the very least, to see if they use some deeper cuts like the Great Lakes Avengers, or The In-Betweener.
