Balthazar, a dark priest, is one of the tougher bosses in that you can beat at two different points in the story. Balthazar can summon undead and use powerful spells that can be very dangerous for your party. However, if you decide to take the boss down, you must have a party that complements each other with the right spells and attacks.
You can encounter a boss fight with Balthazar before or after entering the Shadowfell. This will depend on whether you decide to work with the priest or tie up loose ends. If you aid this dark spell caster, his presence persists throughout the Gauntlet of Shar dungeon in , awaiting you along with the Nightsong at the very end of the area. If you want to kill him ahead of time, simply attack him in the Gauntlet of Shay region.
When you fight Balthazar, he will summon several undead that can deal damage Area of Effect (AoE) spells. These spells can be quite deadly for the party, and it is recommended to spread out your party members as much as possible. To defeat these minions easily, ensure you have a member from the Cleric or Paladin classes, but the distraction the undead cause could give Balthazar more turns to act. For this reason, always have someone attack Balthazar; otherwise, your party can meet with a quick demise.
Party members like Shadowheart are instrumental during this boss fight, with Cleric abilities and spells that can deal radiant damage against all the undead here, including Balthazar himself.
It is easier to battle Balthazar outside the Shadowfell than inside, as he will summon fewer undead. Since the Shadowfell is in the realm of darkness, fighting him outside will reduce the number of attackers. Having said that, the undead outside the Shadowfell are more powerful, so you still need to be a bit careful. It is also important to remember that Balthazar is resistant to Slashing, Piercing, and Bludgeoning damage types, making spells in the best tools for this boss fight.
