In short, a Ascendancy is basically a subclass. Each Ascendancy unlocks a handful of unique skills and perks that you can only purchase with Ascendancy Points, which you earn by completing various trials. Although they work just like skill points, unlocking nodes along a tree, they're an entirely separate resource that you'll have to seek out in order to gain some of your class’ most powerful skills.
