Developer Saber Interactive released Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 in September. In the intervening months, it sold more than five million copies, making it the most successful of the many games set in any of Games Workshop's decades-old IP. However, it's not all peaches and roses. Publisher Focus Entertainment has released a statement addressing the grumblings of some players in the community, who say they are frustrated with the lack of post-launch content updates.
In a blog post (thanks, IGN), Focus reiterates that it's committed to supporting Space Marine 2 beyond 2025, reminding players that new PvP and PvE maps are on the way, in addition to Horde mode, a prestige ranking system, as well as violent new weapons, but all of this takes time. The post reads, in part: «Space Marine 2 has been out for four months, and your continued enthusiasm means the world to us. We’re not done with it! You can expect updates every two months. We’d love to do more, but we’re committed to delivering polished updates, which takes time and care! Thank you for your patience, understanding, and unwavering support.»
Admittedly trained to consume video games differently, we can't help but feel like this is a pretty reasonable release cadence for what is primarily a cinematic single-player game, and that this is what happens when audiences come to expect live service support for any game with multiplayer capabilities. We had a wonderful time with the full-featured Space Marine 2 for review, and for weeks after, would dive into the odd co-op operation or multiplayer match. We suppose new players pick it up every day, and we'd be happy to fire it up again; more power to you if you never stopped and are still hungry for more.
Toil everlasting
Blood for the Blood God, skulls for the Skull Throne
Are you screaming out for new Space Marine 2 content? If you did pick it up at launch, when was the last time you booted up a multiplayer match? Please wait in the comments section below.
