The newly released Xbox Series X/S upgrade for Fallout 4 currently has a bug that prevents players from activating Quality mode.
Bethesda released Fallout 4’s long-awaited next-gen update on Thursday, allowing players who own the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game to upgrade to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions for free.
Much like many other current-gen titles, the update includes Performance mode and Quality mode settings, enabling players to choose between a smoother frame rate or higher visual detail, depending on their preference.
However, players have been reporting that selecting Quality mode on the Xbox Series X/S version appears to result in a game that still runs at a smooth 60 frames per second, as if it was a Performance mode instead.
Digital Foundry’s Thomas Morgan, who specialises in analysing the performance of games, confirmed on X that Quality mode isn’t activating on the Xbox Series X/S version at the moment.
“Fallout 4 fans on next gen, I can confirm that only the 60fps Performance mode works right now,” he wrote. “The update has a bug.
“Disabling the Performance mode seemingly does nothing. It stays at 60fps and the res bound stays the same.”
While the Quality mode appears to be working on the PS5 version, some PlayStation owners have their own issues at the moment.
Players who redeemed the PS4 version of Fallout 4 when it was previously available as a free PlayStation Plus title have discovered that there’s currently no option to upgrade it for free.
Bethesda has told these players that it’s working on the issue, and that the upgrade will eventually be available for PlayStation Plus Extra members through the PlayStation Game Catalogue.
