Have you read any work by Franz Kafka, the German author specialising in surreal fiction? If you did and loved his work, you’ll love this game based on his life and work. It’s a definitive Kafka adventure, called Playing Kafka, by Charles Games. This indie publisher has published titles like Beecarbonize.
Franz Kafka is well-known for his surreal (and often disturbing) stories, like ‘The Metamorphosis.’ You can actually call him the OG of existential weirdness, as his writing style blended reality with nightmarish fantasy. Now, Playing Kafka, the adventure game takes you straight into the surreal and eerie world of the 20th-century writer.
The story begins as you wake up one morning and get arrested. Like, for no reason. At work, people you don’t even recognize have replaced your usual colleagues. That’s just day one in Playing Kafka. The game thrusts you into an upside-down world where nothing makes sense. Most plots are straight out of Kafka’s works like ‘The Trial,’ ‘The Castle’ and the heavy relationship themes from ‘Letter to His Father.’
The game is fully voiced and has neat visuals that drag you straight into that suspenseful Kafkaesque vibe. You’ll make choices that shape the narrative, dealing with atmospheric puzzles and making critical decisions that lead to multiple outcomes.
The drag-and-drop gameplay of Playing Kafka adventure makes the characters and environments pop with life. You get three books and three chapters. It’s like if a dark, philosophical book came to life. You’ll be navigating an unfair trial, wrestling with an ambiguous job and trying to escape your dad’s suffocating presence.
Charles Games developed the adventure Playing Kafka to honour the 100th anniversary of Kafka’s death, in collaboration with the Goethe-Institut in Prague. If you’re a Kafka fan (or even if you’re not), check the game out from the Google Play Store.
