There are plenty of stats to keep track of in but one that can be especially crucial to getting the best performance in combat is shockingly easy to miss out on. Although it's easy to progress through battles and build up a base without optimizing everything, there's no reason to waste something that can help every Pal in combat. If the game never mentions it to begin with, however, it comes as no surprise that it can be especially easy to make such a fundamental mistake.
Luckily, it isn't taking especially long for the community to start cracking the game's secrets. The rapid success in its early access launch has the benefit of building a large and dedicated player base, and strength tends to come in numbers for this kind of work. Althoughthere are doubtless plenty of discoveries yet to come, especially considering the ongoing state of development for the game, some of the most crucial aspects to nail down have already been identified.
Types play a big role in, determining which basic forms of attacks might be strong against which Pals (and, looking at it from the opposite direction, what weaknesses might be expected of various types). The structure of this system is laid out in a diagram included in the game, which shows obvious advantages like Water's strength against Fire and more specific ones like the power of Dragon-type Pals over Dark-types. It doesn't go all the way in explaining how types work in, however, and understanding the full scope requires some intuition or legwork on the player's part.
The big missing component is the fact that STAB, or Same Type Attack Bonus, is a part of the type system. Same Type refers to the synchronicity between a Pal and the attack that it's using, which can help make that attack more effective. Although this feature isn't delineated in the game, the community has managed to nail down its basic efficacy, as noted in a post from Reddit user mastersmash, who explains that the bonus for using an attack that matches the type
