Mr Robot only has one job, and its a job the poor little guy is terrible at. “Not dying” is about as simple as it gets as far as instructions go but time after time Mr Robot gets taken down in a single hit, although generally not before doing the same to the dozens of enemies slowly filling up the screen. While Mr Robot can’t attack directly he can set off explosions Every Extend-style, racking up points and clearing some room in his single-screen arena to give a momentary increase in the odds of living just a bit longer. Fruit pops up at random in the arena and collecting it sets off a videogame-logic bomb, and while the enemies’ explosions don’t cause a chain reaction any fruit within the blast radius does, so when the the screen gets crowded it’s a constant choice between collecting a single bit of fruit to buy some space or holding on a few seconds longer to try for the really big chain.
Don’t Die Mr Robot initially came out for the Vita before eventually being ported to the home consoles and PC. It may not have set the world on fire but the game definitely has its fans, and that’s a good enough reason for a remake/sequel in the form of 3D Dont’ Die Mr Robot. While the game isn’t quite ready yet a demo for it dropped on Steam today, and it’s the complete arcade mode where you’ve got a single life to rack up as high a score as possible. Death may not be inevitable, as evidenced by a percentage counter slowly ticking up in the upper-left corner, but surviving long enough to verify that is going to require more than a few rounds of practice.
