In preparation for the start of Diablo 4 Season 1 – Season of the Malignant, Blizzard has released update v1.1.0a for the long-awaited action RPG sequel. As players have got to grips with the changes and inspected the patch notes, a wave of dissatisfaction has washed up on social media and message boards, as Blizzard has seemingly nerfed pretty much every character class and build in the game.
The reaction has been so bad that Blizzard Global Community Development Director Adam Fletcher took to Twitter overnight and promised a new Campfire Chat on Friday “to talk more about it.” There’s no more details and timings at this point, just to give an idea of how off the cuff this is.
Diablo 4 patch 1.1 adds six new Unique pieces of gear as well as seven Legendary Aspects to add to the late game looting. There’s plenty of balance changes here, but the overwhelming sentiment in the community is that Blizzard has nerfed characters, abilities and weapons much more than they have buffed them, putting statistical balance ahead of fun. They note in a developer comment that players were defeating bosses and characters of much higher levels, that people were reaching higher World Tiers too soon, and more, and so they’ve put limits on that. They’ve even added two second to the time it takes to teleport out of a dungeon!
We’ll have to wait until Friday to see what Blizzard has to say in response, and it’s worth noting that these will be the vocal minority of the game’s player base that are complaining, but they’re also complaints that join points about the base game at release surrounding level scaling and end-game content, which we discussed in the Diablo 4 review.
