Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel made her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in her stand-alone film Captain Marvel. While the movie took some liberties with the character in terms of the specifics behind how she gained her cosmic powers, it stayed true to Carol Danvers’ pre-superhero career as a high-ranking pilot in the United States Air Force. Once she got her powers, her career as a pilot was over as she became an intergalactic warrior, which is basically what happened to her in the comics as well, give or take a few discrepancies, with the main difference being how that change in careers actually impacted Captain Marvel's mental state.

In Captain Marvel #1 by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Dexter Soy, Carol Danvers is going through an identity crisis as she feels guilty about taking up the mantle of ‘Captain Marvel’ following Mar-Vell’s death while also experiencing an overwhelming sense of regret for trading being a superhero for her greatest passion. Carol Danverse genuinely loved being a pilot, and while being granted the gift of flight independent of technology may sound like her dream come true, it completely undermined the whole reason she loved flying so much in the first place: the rush.
