Bungie and PlayStation Studios today announced Marathon, the studio’s first new project in more than a decade.
Not to be confused with Bungie’s original 1994 game also named ‘Marathon,’ this Marathon is a brand new project from the acclaimed studio. Unlike its previous games, Marathon is a sci-fi PvP extraction style shooter where players take on the role of a Runner, a cybernetic mercenary. In it, you’ll explore a lost colony on the planet of Tau Ceti IV in search of riches and adventure.
While Marathon is a wholly original game separate from the original Marathon games, it will still honor the mythology, story, and themes of the franchise. Despite that, Bungie insists you won’t need to have played the original games to understand this new Marathon. Most importantly, Marathon will feel like a Bungie game, something that informs the game’s design philosophy.
Marathon will be a PvP focused game and, for the first time in a Bungie game, won’t have a single player campaign. Instead, much of the experience will focus on creating opportunities for player-driven stories that feed into an overarching game narrative. Expect persistent and evolving gameplay areas where each adventure looks and feels different. Of course, much like Destiny, expect there to be lots of loot to uncover.
No word yet on a release date as the game is still heavily in development. However, when it does launch, you can expect to play it on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. The game will feature cross-play and cross-save right out of the gate.
