The wireless charging pads used in BMW vehicles are thought to be breaking the NFC chip used in the iPhone 15.
As MacRumors reports, multiple instances of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max failing after wireless charging in a BMW have been reported. Typically, the problem presents itself as an Apple Pay issue and the user being unable to access their Apple Wallet. In some instances, the phone enters a data recovery mode with a white screen.
Apple is apparently replacing at least some of the affected phones after confirming the NFC chip has failed. The link between BMW wireless charging pads and the failures was made in the MacRumors forums, but this may end up being a wider issue related to wireless charging.
For now, anyone who drives a BMW and owns an iPhone 15 is advised against using the wireless charging pad as it's likely to damage your smartphone. It's now up to Apple and BMW to figure out between them why this is happening.
Apple is preparing to release an update for the iPhone 15 in order to solve the overheating issues users are currently experiencing. This wireless charging problem may be related to the phone heating up, but if so, why aren't more users experiencing the damage when using other types of wireless charger?
