Gloria Victis has begun its final season, as developer Black Eye Games has a nnounced they are closing, saying “Creating and maintaining an MMORPG is one of the hardest possible challenges in game development”.
The final season is on now and will be ending on October 31st when the game shuts down for good. The announcement of the final season came along within a heartfelt post from the developers on managing to support the Gloria Victis servers for nearly 11 years, bringing it to Steam in 2016, and then updating the game hundreds of times since.
Being an independent developer with about 15 on the team has been a challenge, but they've managed to do it for a long time now. Yet, as the team assessed all of the details, it became clear that financially, it wasn’t working the way it needed to.
“But nothing can last forever, and after thinking it through for countless times, we have to make the toughest decision ever.
Mostly due to financial reasons, as our game has always been a niche which we found extremely hard to expand without losing the game’s identity, and required more and more resources to progress and keep the pace, and due to continuous work without required rest for so long which eventually led to burnouts, we won't be able to provide required maintenance on the game much longer.”
Gloria Victis has had the support of an active community, despite being a niche MMORPG, but this is both a blessing and a bit of a curse in the industry. With team members suffering burnout, it comes as no surprise that with the closure of their game, they’ve chosen to shut down the studio too.
