The development of Mewgenicshas been ongoing for over a decade. First announced in 2012 as a Team Meat project (with McMillen alongside Tommy Refenes), the game was intended to be a turn-based arena combat game. It was put on the back burner in 2014 and officially canceled in 2016. McMillen subsequently departed Team Meat and managed to acquire the rights to Mewgenics in 2018, bringing it back to life alongside developer Tyler Glaiel. In the years since, development has remained ongoing, with Mewgenics evolving to become the isometric tactical roguelike seen today. It's been a crazy journey, but the finish line is now in sight.
McMillen continues to tease the game on Twitter, with one recent post claiming that he believes that Mewgenics «will be seen as my best work,» linking to a Steam blog post detailing more about the game's Fighter class.
