Control: Ultimate Edition is the latest addition to Xbox Game Pass across all available platforms, and following last year's release of Alan Wake 2, there really hasn't been a better time to dive into the game. What's more, Control: Ultimate Edition includes both expansions (The Foundation and AWE) ensuring players get the full experience. In this game, players take on the role of the Federal Bureau of Control's newest director, Jesse Faden, as she explores the Oldest House and seeks to defeat the Hiss, who corrupt reality.
It's a great paranormal game and a great addition to Xbox Game Pass. As many subscribers know, Xbox Game Pass will add just about anything from the smallest indie to the biggest AAA title. The result of this is sometimes lackluster additions, or at the very least, a lot of additions that may not vibe with every single subscriber. Control isn't one of those, as anyone subscribed to the service would be doing themselves a favor by checking it out.
Control ultimately speaks for itself. The Xbox version of the game holds a Metascore of 84 on Metacritic, while OpenCritic clocks it with a Strong OpenCritic Rating, an 83 Top Critic Average, and a total of 89% of critics recommending it. What's more, Control has been nominated, roughly, for over 65 awards across from 13 different organizations, including a handful of Game of the Year nominations. It won 19 of those nominations, also walking away with the Best Art Direction award at The Game Awards 2019.
Control offers over-the-top action, a bizarre but interesting story, and a focus on fun over realism that helps solidify it as one of the year's best.
Control is part of the Remedy Connected Universe, and while that concept has yet to be explored to the fullest yet, this game is an important chapter in it. In fact, one of Control's DLCs connects directly to Alan Wake, and it seems Alan Wake 2's DLC will return the favor.
