Pokemon Fan Art Gives Mewtwo a Viking-Themed Makeover

A talented Pokemon fan online has shown off an impressive piece of artwork, which gives the legendary Mewtwo a new look inspired by the Vikings. The never-ending creativity of the Pokemon community is always surprising, with this latest piece showcasing exactly why that's the case.

Pokemon has been an enormous part of pop culture ever since it debuted back in 1996. Now, almost three decades later, there are over 1000 Pokemon in total, with every fan having their own favorite of the collection. Some fans prefer the classic designs, while others prefer the modern offerings. Because there are so many Pokemon to choose from in such a creative fan base, it seems as though there's always a new piece of fan art celebrating the franchise in unique ways. Recently, one Pokemon fan even built a LEGO Ho-Oh, showcasing the different ways that fans pay tribute to the series.

Redditor Dingaantouwtje shared the awesome piece of fan art, an oil painting depicting Mewtwo with a Viking-themed twist. In the image, Mewtwo stands in the middle of the sea, clad in typical Viking attire, with a ship in the background. According to the user, the decision to turn one of the best legendary Pokemon into a Viking was made because of a commission requesting it, and frankly, the crossover works in practice, even if it doesn't sound like it would on paper.

The Mewtwo artwork is actually part of a larger series of paintings from Dingaantouwtje, aiming to recreate all 151 original Pokemon in a Renaissance style. Previously, they have also shared an incredible Pokemon Psyduck Renaissance painting, among many others, and it's great to see their unique take on so many iconic designs. While it isn't clear which Pokemon they intend to create in this style next, it's safe to say that it's going to be awesome.
