Final Fantasy director Naoki Yoshida - better known among fans as Yoshi-P - says it's "probably about time" for another Final Fantasy Tactics game.
Yoshi-P said this in an interview with our specialist Gabrielle Castania, revealing that he loves the series just as the fans do. He also says he sees the storytelling potential in another Tactics game, even after all this time.
"We have a lot of our staff who worked on previous games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Final Fantasy 12, so you’re going to have a lot of that [Tactics] feel because a lot of the same people are on the team," he says.
He adds that he's "very happy" to hear another Tactics game suggested, because the team are fans of the games themselves. "We love Tactics as well. It’s probably about time that we do a new one."
However, don't expect Final Fantasy 16 to be used as the template for a new Tactics game. Speaking alongside Yoshi-P, localisation lead Michael-Christoper Koji Fox and director Takeo Kujiraoka don't think the most recent Final Fantasy game is a good fit. "What would we even call it?" said Fox, "Final Fantasy 16 Tactics? That’s a lot.”
Still, the fact that project leads over at Square Enix are not only aware of the calls for a sequel but are still fans of the series themselves means we'll probably get a new Tactics game at some point in the future. It will likely just be its own thing, or based on another Final Fantasy game altogether. In the meantime though, the devs have a lot to keep themselves busy with, as the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series continues, and Final Fantasy 14 is still being supported with updates.
