Update: Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition has now been confirmed, and it's a collaboration between Team17 and Digital Eclipse. Marking the 25th anniversary of the beloved strategy game, this version of the game features numerous quality-of-life improvements, an overhauled UI, and more.
As well as optimised controller support, the Anniversary Edition also includes Trophies, various graphics options and filters, a new save system, and full online multiplayer for up to six players. Though it doesn't feature full cross-play support, it is cross-generational, meaning PS5 players can do battle with PS4 users.
On top of all that, the Game Boy Colour version of Worms Armageddon is thrown in for good measure, plus Digital Eclipse's penchant for extra features means you can also enjoy an interactive museum charting the series' history, as well as never-before-seen interviews with developers of the original and current games.
Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition is heading to PS5 and PS4 on 26th September, 2024.
Original Story: Despite many, many sequels and reboots, Worms Armageddon is still widely considered the best in the series. The 2D turn-based strategy game, initially released in 1999, is a true classic, and fortunately it's available on Sony's current platforms so you can relive its chaotic battles. However, it looks like a new version of Team17's beloved title is heading our way, too.
Worms Armageddon: Anniversary Edition has been rated for release on PS5 and PS4 in Taiwan (thanks, Gematsu). All but confirming the game's existence, it sounds like this will be some sort of souped-up version of the multiplayer classic. This year will mark the 25th anniversary of the game, which seems as good a time as any to celebrate it with a special new release.
We've seen some speculation that this project may be formally announced during Nintendo's Direct double-bill later today, so Worms fans may want to tune in just in case.
