Rent-a-Girlfriend is one of the more popular romantic comedy mangas on the market at the moment, with an obligatory anime adaptation and 13 million copies sold. A video game adaptation was always inevitable, then, and who better to pick up the thread than veteran visual novel maker Mages?
While not currently confirmed for Western release, a Gematsu translation of the press materials reveals that the games take place around the time of the third season, although it doesn’t appear to be technically canon. Judging from the blurb, this sounds more like a “what if” scenario for the storyline, which has been running in Weekly Shonen since 2017.
Due in Japan this year
The main plot sees Kazuya Kinoshita dumped by his girlfriend, and in order to keep face he ends up renting Chizuru Mizuhara. After his family and friends take a liking to Mizuhara, the put-upon protagonist is forced to keep renting her – despite the inevitable issues that leads to. Later his ex-girlfriend also re-emerges, attempting to put a stop to the faux-relationship, and other employees from the rental agency feature.
Many of these characters will be present in the game, as Kinoshita works multiple part-time summer jobs alongside them on an idyllic tropical island. You can probably guess where this story is going, and you’ll orchestrate its outcome, with multiple endings available based on the decisions you make.
All of the voice talent from the anime will reprise their roles for the adaptation, so this is effectively acting as an extension of the show. We’d be surprised if this didn’t eventually get localised, as many of the manga volumes have already been translated to English, and the anime is available to stream on Crunchy Roll.
